CSIR-UGC Electrical Engineering Science Syllabus 2013

The CSIR-UGC Electrical Engineering Sciences Examination Syllabus is given below in detailed manner for your reference.

Electric Circuits and Fields: Node and mesh analysis, transient response of dc and ac networks, resonance, sinusoidal steady-state analysis, basic filter concepts, voltage sources and ideal current, Norton’s, Thevenin’s, and Superposition and Maximum Power Transfer theorems, three phase circuits, two port networks, measurement of power in three phase circuits, electric field and potential due to point, Gauss Theorem,  line, plane and spherical charge distributions, Biot-Savart’s and Ampere’s laws, dielectrics, inductance, capacitance.

Electrical Machines: Magnetic circuits
Single phase transformer- equivalent circuit, Magnetic circuits, phasor diagram, regulation and efficiency, tests. Three phase transformers- parallel operation, connections, auto-transformer; DC Machines- types , energy conversion principles, starting and speed control of dc motors, Single phase induction motors, synchronous machines performance, regulation and parallel operation of synchronous machine operating as generators, starting and speed control of synchronous motors and its applications, servo and stepper motors. Three phase induction motors- principles, types, performance characteristics, starting and speed control.

Power Systems: Basic power generation concepts, transmission line models and performance, Distribution systems, per-unit quantities, bus impedance and admittance matrices, load flow, voltage and frequency control, power factor correction; cable performance, insulation, corona and radio interference , unbalanced analysis, symmetrical components, basic concepts of protection and stability; Small Introduction to HVDC systems.

Control Systems: Principles of feedback control, transfer function, block diagrams, Bode plots, Root loci, Lag , Lead and Lead-lag compensation, steady state errors, Routh and Nyquist techniques,; proportional, PI, PID controllers, controllability and observability, state space model , state transition matrix.


Power Electronics and Drives: Semiconductor Power devices - power diodes, GTOs, MOSFETs, IGBTs – their characteristics and basic triggering circuits; power transistors, thyristors, triacs,  diode rectifiers, thyristor based line commutated ac to dc converters, dc to dc converters – buck, boost, buck-boost, single phase and three phase dc to ac inverters and related pulse width modulation techniques, c`uk, flyback, forward, push-pull converters, stability of electric drives; induction motors and synchronous motors, speed control issues of dc motors.

    As per recent changes in CSIR NET Exam pattern, Engineering sciences has been discontinued from CSIR NET so Electrical engineering candidates have to appear in GATE exam.
